There are many gender descriptors. We are missing some vital ones. If gender is about our own internal sense of self, all of the existing words are lacking half of the picture, which is what everyone else thinks. At first glance this may seem totally inappropriate, but we in fact are dependent on external observers and society to give gender any sort of meaning, whether we like it or not.
Since we are being pedantic, pronouns are much more functionally useful. We don’t have any business asking about gender because there are too many dependent factors and it doesn’t actually tell the person asking very much. We should ask for sex (in, like, medical situations) and pronouns. This should have the added benefit of people being less mean to one another. We all seem to have no issue with calling each other by our names, right? (I am looking at you Jesus Hitler/ Nutella/ Santa Claus).
